Through teaching science at Amesbury Archer, we aim to develop children’s inquisitive natures and foster curiosity, in order to promote respect for the world in which they live.

Our school values remain central. Children are encouraged to see themselves as scientists; to approach investigations with enthusiasm and resilience; to critically evaluate evidence and to have aspirations to take science beyond the classroom.

Our curriculum develops working scientifically skills, which are built-on and developed throughout their school careers. We ensure that they can use equipment, conduct investigations, build arguments and explain concepts confidently, whilst continuing to be curious about their surroundings.

We place an emphasis on developing scientific knowledge and vocabulary, with links to everyday life giving context to their learning. We aim to achieve this through exploration, hands-on experiences, asking questions and gathering information from a range of written and media sources.


Teachers create a positive attitude to science learning within their classrooms and reinforce an expectation that all children are capable of achieving high standards in science. Our whole school approach to the teaching and learning of science involves the following;

  • Science is taught weekly. We aim to achieve an average of 2 hours science every week following planned and arranged topic blocks.
  • We use the Twinkl ‘Plan It’ scheme for Science because this provides structured and progressive learning across both key stages.
  • Teachers are not constrained by this scheme and are encouraged to enhance the children’s learning within the year group objectives by using demonstrations and hands-on learning opportunities.
  • We build upon the learning and skill development of the previous years. As the children’s knowledge and understanding increases, and they become more proficient in selecting, using scientific equipment, collating and interpreting results, they become increasingly confident in their growing ability to come to conclusions based on real evidence.
  • Working scientifically is embedded into lessons to ensure these skills are being developed throughout the children’s school career and new vocabulary and challenging concepts are introduced. This is developed through the years, in-keeping with the topics.
  • Children with SEND, like all children, have quality first teaching during their science lessons. When required, additional adult support (teacher or TA) will be provided and the activities may be adapted, so that they can access all learning. Additional equipment or resources will be used for specific needs, for example i-pads, visual prompts and coloured paper.
  • Teachers demonstrate how to use scientific equipment, and the various Working Scientifically skills in order to embed scientific understanding. Teachers find opportunities to develop children’s understanding of their surroundings by accessing outdoor learning and workshops with experts.

In addition, the school is a member of the Stonehenge Primary Science Cluster which offers opportunities in the provision of science resources, staff CPD and for sharing best practice and ideas.


Our approach at Amesbury Archer provides the children with a fun, engaging, high-quality science education that provides solid foundations for understanding the world.
